In-Out para Carlos Aured
En 1990 comencé a trabajar en Canal + y una de las primeras personas que conocí fue a un tipo cincuentón, orondo y con unas bolsas enormes en los ojos que intentaban ocultar el carácter afable de su dueño sin conseguirlo.
Carlos Aured ingresó en el Plus ocupándose de la verificación de películas. El trabajo de verificador es uno de los más desconocidos del panorama audiovisual (al menos hasta la llegada sistema digital) pero tiene una importancia enorme: un verificador revisa que lo que se va a emitir esté libre de fallos de imagen y en perfectas condiciones y por ello tiene que ver todo lo que se va a emitir.
En los 90, las nuevas cadenas comenzaron a comprar librerías de series, películas y animación para rellenar la parrilla. La mayor parte de ellas, sobre todo las películas, estaban en negativo. TVE tenía mucho material telecinado (que es como se denomina a una película que se ha pasado de negativo a Betacam u otro formato de vídeo) pero Canal + tenía el compromiso de emitirlas en su formato original y los telecines de la época (Madrid Film sobre todo) funcionaban por pereza, o presupuesto, en automático, es decir, dejaban la ventanilla de 3:4 sobre cualquiera que fuera el formato del negativo y a tirar. He visto aberraciones, os lo aseguro.
Pero los telecines de aquella época no eran tan finos como los de ahora y era muy frecuente que hubiera un pelo o nervio en la parte inferior de la pantalla (no era otra cosa que la mierda que coge el negativo y que el operador dejaba sin limpiar en la felpa de la ventanilla) o Drops.
Un Drop es literalmente lo que significa en inglés: una caída de una de las 625 lineas que componían la imagen. Cuando eso pasa se ve una porción de la pantalla durante uno o dos frames mal ya que la linea caída tendía a replicarse hacia abajo. La manera de eliminar ese fallo era duplicar uno de los campos a de cada frame. Y se hacía a mano, y lo hacían (hacen, supongo) los verificadores junto con muchas más cosas.
8 horas al día en una cabina en penumbra para que tu veas la tele sin fallos.
Carlos fue el primero en entrar a verificar, había abandonado el cine, o creo que el cine le había abandonado a él, y nos hicimos muy amigos ya que yo quería absorber todo lo que pudiera sobre técnica y tecnología y pasaba largas horas sentando en su cabina. Yo trabajaba como ayudante del responsable de Producción Ajena del Plus, el también fallecido Jose Manuel Lavín, y me encargaba de prepararle las cintas a Carlos.
Yo aprendía y el charlaba y así durante una o dos horas al día durante un año.
Carlos jamás hablaba sobre su carrera cinematográfica si no era para contar alguna anécdota sobre aquella o aquel. Pero si hablaba y hablaba de cine sin despegar la vista de la pantalla y mientras me explicaba la dificultad de montar un plano secuencia como el de "Sed de Mal" súbitamente su brazo paraba el Jog del Betacam y rebobinaba unos frames para arreglar el Drop. Algunos, incluso, los coleccionaba.
Un día, sin yo decirle nada, me pidió que cogiera el control del panel del Betacam y que aprendiera a marcar In's y Out's (puntos de entrada y salida para una edición no lineal) "Dale fuerte a la tecla, fuerte. ¡Golpéala!" me decía y saco un par de BTC y me enseño a montar planos a corte."Es como música, es un ritmo, un tempo, es algo interno. Algunos lo tienen innato y otros tardan años en cogerlo. A ver como se te da".
Y así horas y días. Carlos me enseño algo que no tiene precio para un cinéfilo, aprendí a apreciar la cadencia de un montaje, el valioso cálculo de tiempo, de como una mirada en primer plano cambia de significado alargándola o recortándola unos frames.
El tempo, el ritmo. Chopin, Bach, Miles... todo se puede explicar en función de eso, del ritmo y del tempo. Y me lo enseño un hombre que no será recordado como un grandísimo director de cine, su filmografía no entra dentro de lo canónico.
David me dijo el miércoles que Carlos había fallecido de un ataque al corazón fulminante. Fue encontrado en el suelo de su casa caído. Deja una huella imborrable en mi y en muchos que lo conocimos bien. E incluso en las arcas de Sogecable ya que durante muchos años fue el hombre que más rentabilidad daba a la cadena al ser el responsable de la compra del género porno. Sacaba un rendimiento a las compras de un 4000%.
Pero también deja un tesoro.
Hubo una película especialmente difícil de localizar para su emisión en el Plus. "El Festín de Babette" de Gabriel Axel (1987). La distribuidora Filmax sólo nos pudo dar una copia terrible y el telecinado dejo un fallo de casi dos segundos en la cinta. Dos segundos no pueden arreglarse, son 50 frames. Milagros Pombo (una crack al cargo de los materiales) estaba desesperada por que era, realmente, un problema y en esa época, en el Plus, no fallábamos por orgullo torero.
Carlos, muy tranquilo, le dijo que no se preocupara. Se bajo a la cabina y estuvo encerrado 4 horas. Se vio la película dos veces y cogió un inserto de un santo que preside el Festín y que no representaba nada en el montaje y lo inserto durante los dos segundos rotos.
No sólo cambió el significado del plano, cambio la intención de la secuencia. Es la más: la mejoró.
Con un plano, sólo uno. 50 frames.
En algún lugar de Tres Cantos u otro almacén estará esa cinta cogiendo polvo. O es posible que se encuentre en DVD ya que el trabajo de Carlos era tan bueno que las mismas distribuidoras pedían el master verificado para hacer el DVD.
Puede que un plano de 2 segundos no signifique mucho para ti pero, para mi es el mejor legado que un hombre como él ha dejado en mi.

Estos días he leído con emoción una nota que me mandó años ha y que aún conservo, en la que simplemente me cuenta cómo le había iluminado un viernes de buena mañana cuando se huele el motín desenfrenado del principio del fin de semana, el hecho de habernos visto a mí y a la chica con la que sigo desde entonces como bola iluminada, ilusionando en medio del fragor de los ruídos y la basura a espaldas de la Gran Vía, en esas callejuelas de Ballesta y Desengaño de Madrid que para mí también fueron durante tiempo mi vida. Supongo que después de todos estos años en los que finalmente te das cuenta de que en el mundo laboral a los demás no les importas nada, él ya lo sabía y se dedicaba a su trabajo sin ambages ni florituras, sencillamente haciéndolo y, al mismo tiempo, dedicándose a esa gente joven e ilusionada con la que a él le gustaba estar para mostrarse tierno, sin ningún tipo de hipocresía ni intereses... radicalmente opuesto a los remolinos tortuosos en los que se convierte muchas veces la vida e intimamente ligado a las corrientes bravas desde donde debe ir dirigida la vida... en hechos y en pensamiento.
